A key guiding principle of my life is “systems > goals”.
Goals are micro trackers. They are useful but oftentimes, humans serve goals more than goals serve humans. Systems are about the skills and relationships we build. Systems serve humans.
How commonplace it is to read of people succeeding or failing in their goals and feeling empty after, left with a void and a question: “is this all there is?” Emptiness either way. With systems, the association with success and failure is different. Entering journeys with systems thinking assures us skills and relationships that leave us better off on the other end than before we entered.
Ask yourself: what system serves me? Then ask: what goals serve the system?
